Al Merrick began shaping surfboards in Santa Barbara, California in the late 1960s and founded Channel Islands Surfboards as a professional operation in 1969. The Channel Islands label became synonymous with professional surfboard performance after Kelly Slater — widely considered the greatest competitive surfer in history — began riding Al Merrick's boards during the early 1990s and went on to win all eleven of his World Surf League Championship titles on Channel Islands boards.
The Channel Islands roster extended to Tom Curren (three World Championships), Conner and Parker Coffin, Filipe Toledo, and numerous other elite surfers. The collaboration between Merrick's shaping expertise and Slater's feedback produced boards including the Flyer, the Rocketfish, the Pod and the Fred Rubble — models that influenced the entire industry's direction in high-performance shortboard design for decades. Al Merrick's son Britt Merrick now leads Channel Islands' shaping and design.
Fits perfectly on surfboards, board bags, vans, helmets and surf accessories.
