The Honda VFR1200X Crosstourer was introduced in 2012 as Honda's flagship adventure touring machine, built on the platform of the VFR1200F sports tourer. The Crosstourer uses a 1237cc V4 engine — a configuration Honda has used in its VFR range since the 1980s — producing 130hp with a gear-driven counter-balance shaft that gives the engine its distinctive mechanical character. The V4 configuration, with its 360-degree crank firing order, provides a broad spread of torque ideal for loaded touring.

The Crosstourer was notable at launch for being one of the first adventure-touring motorcycles to offer a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) option alongside the standard manual gearbox — Honda's DCT technology allows the rider to change gear with handlebar-mounted buttons without using the clutch lever, a feature that has since become central to Honda's adventure range across the Africa Twin, NT1100 and others.

The Crosstourer's specification at launch was among the most comprehensive in the adventure segment: heated grips, linked ABS braking, Honda Electronic Suspension (HESD), adjustable windscreen and a full set of accessory luggage options from Honda.
