Bathory is one of the most influential bands in extreme metal history. Founded in Stockholm in 1983 by Quorthon, the project's first four albums — Bathory, The Return, Under the Sign of the Black Mark and Blood Fire Death — are foundational texts of black metal, raw and ferocious in a way few have matched since.

From 1988 onwards, Quorthon pivoted to epic Viking metal with Hammerheart, Nordland I and Nordland II, creating a second legacy that inspired an entire generation of Scandinavian bands.
