The Citroën DS3 was introduced in 2009 and brought the DS premium sub-brand to the supermini class, combining distinctive styling with a high level of personalisation options that set it apart from mainstream competitors like the Volkswagen Polo and Mini. The DS3 used a range of THP (Turbo High Pressure) petrol engines and HDi diesels, with the 155hp THP unit forming the basis of the DS3 Racing — a limited production special built in collaboration with Sébastien Loeb and producing 207hp in DS3 WRC bodywork for the DS3 Racing specification.
In the World Rally Championship, the Citroën DS3 WRC became one of the most successful rally cars of its era. Sébastien Loeb won the 2011 and 2012 Manufacturers' Championships with the DS3 WRC, while the car also supported Loeb's run of nine consecutive World Drivers' Championships. Mikkel Østberg, Thierry Neuville and later Kris Meeke also competed in DS3 WRC machinery.
The DS3 nameplate continued after Citroën's DS sub-brand became the standalone DS Automobiles marque in 2015, with the DS 3 Crossback carrying the heritage forward in crossover form.
